Year 7 students have been studying African Art inspired by my own experience in Tanzania and also the work of neighboring artist and cartoonist Stephff who creates images for the newspaper "The Nation". These paintings gave the year 7 students experience in scaling up drawing skills, in mixing colours for accurate results and working in a variety of media. If you look closely you will see that the paintings are divided into sections enabling the students to try different techniques.

Year 9 students have yet again produced some beautiful Art work. Last year they impressed us with their Pop Art sculptures and huge Optical Art (some are displayed in the lunch canteen in the Secondary building). This term they have already completed individual Futurist paintings after having learned to draw the human form in proportion. Look at their paintings inspired by Futurism and created by drawing from the moving figure. Year 9 worked hard to consider terminology and elements in their paintings such as their use of colour, light, line and proportion to convey the sense of movement with atmosphere and flair.
Year 7's African masks. After spending two years in Africa, I was keen to explore African masks as a project with year & in Bangkok. They listened to Masai music and researched Mali designs. They even visited a museum collection of ancient African and Asian masks close to the school; to see images of this visit click here. | ![]() |
Year 8's Optical Paintings, they designed these in groups and produced the paintings in sections.
Year 8 learned all about drawing lettering and using guidelines for Graphics before embarking on these large scale papier-mache sculptures. Students worked in pairs or threes to design and make these wonderful Pop Art sculptures.
