Unit: Japanise Ukiyoe and Block Printing

Aims: To learn from observation how to draw natural forms accurately, know the context and charateristics of Ukiyoe be able to generate relevant ideas for collograph printing.

Starter: on  a small piece of paper  draw 3 thumbnail sketches from still-life of natural forms

Input: using viewfinders, board demonstrations, natural forms, using curved guidelines, composition

Activity: observation drawing of natural forms (Drawing Test)

Plenary: question and explain accuracy, tone and proportions/scale, composition

Learn to improve drawings using tone and accuracy of scale

Starter: compare homework in pairs and give a mark out of 6 for use of tone, composition and accuracy and take an average

Input: board examples, different types of mark-making using contour shading

Activity: draw skulls and shells from different views.

Plenary: summarize and questioning rules for drawing using tone accurately.

Draw four shells/seedpods in one arrangement, add tone to one of them

Ukiyoe

Starter: write down four characteristics of Japanese Ukiyoe samples

Activity: use grid measured carefully to create a critical study (artists copy) use watercolour pencils and watercolours

Plenary: summarize successes and failures, evaluate

Draw from a photograph of a holiday scene, use guidelines and add colour

Learn the context of Japanese Ukiyoe

Starter: double page title “Japan”

Input: show samples and discuss

Activity: stick in photographs and scenes from nature, rip images in half and complete the images with different media, pencil, pen, watercolour

Plenary: questioning which observations and photographs will make the most effective prints and why

Write a paragraph on the meaning of Ukiyoe and explain what they advertised within Japanese culture.

Composition, pleasing or not (aesthetics)

Design, thumbnails, scale, depth,  composition

Starter: make a list of six subjects for a Ukiyoe design

Input: example of how to use own imagery in designing a Ukiyoe

Activity: draw from observation, close up sections and combine with holiday drawing to create thumbnail compositions for own Ukiyoe designs.

Plenary: peer discussion of best to worst composition designs

Find out the meaning of collograph, write up and find two examples to draw using pencil

Understand the context of using nature in Japanese design

Starter: open questions-Japan

Input: write up student results and input on the board.

Activity: make an illustrated mind map of Japan with contextual information about Japan, its history and society.

Plenary: context of Japan, art and why nature is important to Ukiyoe printing

Find some examples of Japanese anime and try drawing them. Bring in card string and foil

Make another template at home for a class prin based on earlier drawings of natural forms.

Activity: as a class complete a large combined print based on Natural forms, seed pods and shells

Unit: Pattern and Quartering

Aims: To learn how to make patterns; Islamic, M C Escher, Art Nouveau (12 weeks) including grid pattern making in mixed media and block print quartering technique using poly-printing.
