Art and Design Technology Visits 2010-2014
Both Art and Design Technology Students are encouraged to visit artists in their studios, galleries and design exhibitions to inspire their ideas.
Year 7 meets the artist, Stephff, from The Nation
On Monday 30th September Year 7 students went during their Art lesson to view the collection of masks and sculptures belonging to the famous political cartoonist, Stephff, who draws an image everyday for The Nation newspaper. Stephff's works illustrate his genuine concern for human rights, his insistence on the upholding of liberal values. As an obsession, Stephff's fascination is with tribal carved masks and many of the masks were seen by us at his Primitive Art Gallery in Yenakat. This visit has enabled the students get first hand inspiration for the African masks that they are currently making in papier-mâché. There will be images of the students own finished pieces in next month’s newsletter.
TCDC (Design Centre)
Year 11 Design Technology students visited TCDC to see the “Unmet Need” exhibition to view the timeline of Design Movements. On the 23rd November Year 11 IGCSE the students studying Graphic Products for their coursework visited the TCDC gallery at Emporium. We observed the “Timeline of Products since 1900” and took inspiration from innovative artefacts and objects, looking at their style and trends of their time and culture.

V64 (Artists Collective)
V64 is a collaboration of 72 artists who exhibit and create art in Laksi. We interviewed the artists, sketched the art in the galleries, made close-up careful studies of techniques and completed a workshop in Expressive-action painting.
Meeting real artists (as opposed to researching them online or in books) we were able to see Fine artists living and working in their studios. We gained an insight into their daily lives. Some of the artists were actually painting or sculpting so we could watch their techniques and the artists we interviewed gave us an explanation of their ideas and inspiration.
The workshop was directed by two Expressionist artists Kitti Narod and Boonchai Wedmakhan. We were encouraged to be ourselves, sharing some of our experiments. We expressed emotion though action mark-making and by experimenting with the different types of paint and mixed media.

Visiting Artist Workshop
On 28th November we had a visit from the Korean Artist, Young Ji who worked with Year 10 students in the ADT room for a double lesson. She demonstrated different techniques of drawing including linear illustration and portraits. The students had the rare opportunity of discussing the artist’s own work with her whilst looking through photographs of her portfolio.

Koi Gallery (Pirmin Breu)
On the 14th November Katy, Martina, Jeab and Djenab took a look at the Koi Gallery in Sukumwit 31 and viewed artwork relating to their project “Spaces”.They sketched the work and tried to understand the messages and the context of his conceptual style. Year 10 students are “making visual connections” between artists’ work, the artists that influence the artists and the students’ own ideas. Visiting Galleries are very important to see how the Art world operates, how Art is placed within history and also understand the variety of contemporary Art in Bangkok.

MOCA
On the 8th February Year 11 students went to MOCA Art Gallery for a day of taking photographs and getting inspired for their IGCSE exam project. The Gallery’s six floors provided Phone, Florence, Emily and Mint with a multitude of imagery and relevant first hand critical resources. From this art work each student intends to use at least one Thai artist’s style in their exam project and adopt the artist’s approach in their own work. Each student is working individually and responds to the art work that they have each chosen in the gallery in their own way. |

Shadow Puppets (Visiting theatre and students make their own puppets and put on their own show)
Students in Secondary wrote stories, made puppets and performed their Shadow plays in one day and in true traditional Thai-style on the 27th May 2013. They worked on the theme “The River”. They responded to this theme with their own ideas after exploring and learning some historical facts about Mekong, Chao Phraya and Kwai. The students’ stories were Shakespearian in style and they seemed to reflect their own ideas encompassing Death and Love within their plots. Primary and Secondary students watched a visiting Thai Shadow Puppet theatre for inspiration and used the opportunity to ask many questions and receive information on the Thai traditional Shadow Puppetry. The Secondary students made some beautiful Shadow puppets from recycled cardboard and other sustainable materials. They then performed their plays in groups to the Primary students and to each other. The day realised the most creative and innovative ideas developed, designed and engineered entirely by the students themselves.

Set Design and Painting with KS3
In the UK we painted huge flats for the Lighthouse Theatre in the city of Poole, a huge scale production every year for ten years. Each flat was 2m x 4.5m. We designed and painted each scene with the students each night after school for an entire term. In Africa on a much smaller scale we had similar fun taking the Fauvism theme and mixing it with the contemporary artist's style Stuart Davis for an original feel to the Sound of Music this year.
